The English and Tagalog Phonetics
Have you learned your ABC, English and Filipino alphabets?
Now, let's go to the next step! The Phonetics. It is the combination of consonant and vowel letters.
These phonetics are available in the capital and small letters as there are English letters that are not always in use in the Filipino language.
This way, the kids will learn to read English words, not just Tagalog.
The English Phonetics
In English alphabet, there are five (5) vowel letters, Aa Ee Ii Oo Uu, and twenty-one (21) consonant letters, Bb Cc Dd Ff Gg Hh Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz.
In English phonetics, there are two (2) phonetic examples for the consonant letter Qq.
For the reason that most of the English words that start with the consonant letter Qq, are followed by the vowel letter Uu.
But, it is pronounced based on the sound of the second vowel letter.
Here are the pronunciations of the consonant letter Qq NOT followed by the vowel letter Uu:
- QA is KA as in Qatar (an Arab country in Middle East)
- QE is KE as in Qetesh (a fertility goddess)
- QI is KI as in Qintar (a monetary unit of Albania)
- QO is KO as in Qozhaya (a monastery in Lebanon)
- QU is KU as in Qurl (lazy)
Here are the pronunciations of the consonant letter Qq followed by the vowel letter Uu:
- QUA is KWA as in Quarter
- QUE is KWE as in Question
- QUI is KWI as in Quiz
- QUO is KO/KOW as in Quotes
- QU is KYU as in Qubo (American channel for children)
The Tagalog Phonetics
This Tagalog phonetics has five (5) vowel letters and sixteen (16) consonant letters, Bb Kk Dd Gg Hh Ll Mm Nn Ññ NGng Pp Rr Ss Tt Ww Yy.
It is composed of the Abakada alphabet, including the consonant letters Ññ and NGng.
The Official Tagalog Phonetics
The official Tagalog phonetics has 28 letters.
It has the (23) consonant letters, the entire consonant English letters with the Spanish consonant letter Ññ and the Tagalog letter NGng and the (5) vowel letters.
However, in this reading material, the consonant letter Qq has two (2) phonetics examples.
Similar to the English phonetics (see above for the pronunciation guide), most of the words that start with the consonant letter Qq are followed by the vowel letter Uu.
But, it is pronounced based on the sound of the second vowel letter.
